BOOM BOOM BOOM like it like it – a 4MINUTE fanbash in Stockholm

May 30, 2014 § 5 Comments

Stockholm, Sunday 25th of May 2014, election day for the European parliament amongst other.

Steaming summer outside and steaming anticipation inside the concert venue (and an increasingly hot humidity due to broken A/C). We, a group of ten friends that met up at my place a couple of hours earlier to have some drinks, listen to music and watch MVs to get in the right mode (4MINUTE-mode), were finally there.

It was a rather surreal feeling riding the Stockholm Metro, to get off and walk down the sloping street towards the concert venue in a city so familiar, towards something not so familiar in Stockholm at all. To stand in line for K-pop in Seoul or Paris I have done. But this is Stockholm, not such a usual thing…

4minutedebaserque

We were kind of late but so was the show as well. The line moved quickly and suddenly we were inside. I have been to this place many times before, for clubs and concerts. To be here now with the agenda to see one of my favourite K-pop acts felt kinda strange. As me and my friends made way through the packed, hot concert hall to find the best spot in front of the stage I could still not actually understand what we were about to experience. Not until the lights were turned off and the music, a remix version of Whats Your Name, blasted through us all I started realizing that 4MINUTE was actually about to perform in Stockholm that evening. This is the remix versions they performed:

I didn’t want to have any expectations at all for this event. Also, I have not been that in to K-pop at all lately. My interest have been fading as I have gotten other things to think about and the K-pop scene of lately has felt a little bit… blank. The outlook of getting really disappointed by this historical event hung over me as a dark cloud many weeks in advance.

There was absolutely no reason for worry though.

They gave it all.

After a similar showcase in Barelona a couple of nights earlier, the five members of 4MINUTE entered the stage looking super-relaxed and like they really enjoyed it.  It was an instant atmosphere of party that lasted through out the evening. There is of course a reason for this being one of my favourite groups. They are super cool and could pass for hard as stone. Cute is not what primarily sells them and sometimes they almost have an angry feel to their music. But with no language in common with the audience, the group made their best efforts communicating anyways and they felt really warm. Som lines and words in English, an interpreter on stage during the breaks and a few words in Swedish (Sohyun made the crowd go crazy as she shouted TJENA! (hi!) over and over again). It felt like these five women were quite moved with the responses they got from Stockholm. The constant sing alongs, roars and atmosphere that came from of a crowd consisting of women and men in different ages from not only Sweden but actually from all over Europe could not be mistaken for anything else but love. As the members asked if there were people from other countries than Sweden present they got Norway, Finland, Denmark, Poland and Germany and more as reply. It then felt like they might have been able to fill one or two shows more in Europe somewhere, not just Barcelona and Stockholm.

As earlier said, all five of the members put on an excellent show but actually Hyuna stood out a bit with her super-energy and focus, together with Sohyun who was extremly happy and shouted words in English and Swedish over and over again as she constantly interacted with the audience. Performing hits like Muzik, Mirror Mirror, Change, Huh and Hot Issue it sometimes felt like the floor would collapse due to the jumping crowd. Next to me during the concert stood a guy in my age (3o-ish) and looked absolutley mesmerized most of the time. Like it was the best day of his life. And I was there with him. Not strange at all those feelings and reactions, but quite logic. The group handed out water bottles, flirted, threw glow in the dark braclets far out in the audience and answered questions. The temperature was constantly rising (didn’t care at all about this though and I don’t think anyone else did either) at the venue and after repeatingly explaining how hot it was the members eventually started pouring water on each other and on the crowd. It felt like there were no boundaries for what would be allowed, and that is quite a refreshing feeling comming from a South Korean girl group, as you always expect everything around to be very restrained.

As you see, there was no Volume Up nor any I My Me Mine in the set-list and that was of course a bit disappointing, but on the other hand I wanted them to go on for another hour… Although they sang a piece of it acapella during their chat with the audience.

I was anticipating the worst for this evening, just in case. But ended up happier then I thought possible. Clearly, this group is no joke. Talented, charismatic, sweet and extremely cool.

So was it all perfect? Well nothing is and there could have been better light on stage, the stage could have been bigger and sometimes the group and stage gave a messy feeling and the coreography did not present itslef perfectly during parts of the concert. But added up these are just small things in comparison.

And yes of course I bought a lightstick. Expensive but what the hell, fuckin 4MINUTE doesn’t come to Sweden every day. People might have stared at the sweaty me during the Metro-ride home and I wanted to tell them all about the brilliant evening I just had. No one asked though, so I sat there. Silent but happy.

4minutehairylegslightstick

Such awesome, and as I have written before, epic on the scale like seeing Patti Smith or Morrissey for the first time.

I Got a Boy – the stupidest thing

SNSD-I-Got-A-Boy-Concept-Pic-ktjpop-33140608-1280-960

If they perhaps would have cut the first 1:35 of the song or maybe some other part of it, and changed the lyrics for the rest or something, and got another video-director, then perhaps I would have been able to really enjoy this. Because the teaser pics were really kind of awesome. But I have to tell you this is not good enough. And out of all the terrible lyrics in the world of SNSD, and I’m telling you, I’ve put up with a lot of stuff from them concerning women and men, hatred agaisnt women. This is perhaps the stupidest? WHAT IS IT EVEN SUPPOSED TO MEAN?!!!

Am I’m having it especially hard this time because it’s impossible to interpret humor in to it? Because even though it’s too much it’s not even close to enough? They could have looked cool, fierce and sexy, but they don’t even make it to cute. And don’t get me wrong, I REALLY like the I Got a Boy-part…

Read the lyrics and then watch the MV below if interested. And this comes from someone who has Genie as his alarm-signal.

Ayo! GG! Yeah Yeah, shall we start?
Gosh! Look at her, look
What happened to her that she cut her hair? huh?
Gosh! Again look at her, look!
From head to toe, her style has changed
Why did she do that? I’m curious to death
why did she do that? Tell me

Ha ha! Let me introduce myself!
Here comes trouble! Follow after me!
Oh oh oh yeah oh, oh oh yeah oh
You really are something else!

Who is she? Ridiculous
Do you know you’re too self-assertive? She thinks I’m average
Yeah, I guess she really liked him!
No way! No way!
She became so pretty and sexy, it’s because of him, right?
I almost asked her what her new makeup was

Truthfully, I’ve seen it for the first time
The deep eyes, like a scarred beast
I was dizzy by just talking to him!
You really are something else! You really are something else!

Oh ohh eh oh
(Here’s come trouble, hey girl listen!)
Oh ohh eh oh
You really are something else! (something!)
Oh ohh eh oh (Hey!)
Oh ohh eh oh (Na na na na hey!)
You really are something else!

Ayo! Stop! Let me put it down another way.

I got a boy, a handsome one! I got a boy, a kind one!
I got a boy handsome boy, who took all my heart
I got a boy, a handsome one! I got a boy, a kind one!
I got a boy awesome boy, I must have really fallen for him

Ah, my prince! When are you gonna come save me?
Will you lift me in your arms and fly, like a white dream?

I’m like, surprised, mental collapse!
He wants to see my face without makeup.
I really like him, would it be okay to show it to him?
Oh! Never! Right? Right?
Let’s keep what needs to be kept, right! right!
Don’t ever forget this until you take all of his heart!

Oh ohh eh oh, Oh ohh eh oh
Even if I stay up all night, it’s not enough, everything everything
Oh ohh eh oh, Oh ohh eh oh
Our biggest interest, everything everything

Listen to me, you all know him, right?
He’s a bit young but he’s full inside
Sometimes he is as reliable as an oppa but when he acts charming, he is so cute

Oh ohh eh oh, Oh ohh eh oh
You’re crazy, crazy
Oh ohh eh oh, Oh ohh eh oh
You’re crazy, crazy

I’m really angry, my boy doesn’t look at me as a girl
What should I do when I feel hopeless?
Should I make him feel jealous? I’m so upset! What do I do?
No way! No way!

Don’t stop! Let’s bring it back to 140

I got a boy, a handsome one! I got a boy, a kind one!
I got a boy handsome boy, who took all my heart
I got a boy, a handsome one! I got a boy, a kind one!
I got a boy awesome boy, I must have really fallen for him

Always next to me, it’s you, who’s on my side and listens to me
You oh oh oh oh~ you oh oh oh oh~
I’m happy as it is right now, cause everything will work

I got a boy, a handsome one! I got a boy, a kind one!
I got a boy handsome boy, who took all my heart
I got a boy, a handsome one! I got a boy, a kind one!
I got a boy awesome boy, I must have really fallen for him (x2)

I got a boy, a handsome one!

God I really wanted this to be awesome. 😦 Gonna love them still though

End of the year, K-pop 2012. The group that surprised me.

December 31, 2012 § 4 Comments

Three girl groups are fighting over being my big surprise of 2012.

wonder

Wonder Girls is a group that I never cared much for and every new release after 2008 has been a big disappointment (did not know they existed back then though). THEN, Like This, their epic Korean comeback of 2012 happend, a track that blew me off my feet and have been one of my most listened to during the year. I know I’m not the only one responding this way. So great. But they are not my biggest surprise of the year.

Dal Shabet is another group that never got my attention before, I’ve had a hard time coping with the young and more then anything, cute groups of K-pop, Dal Shabet has indeed been one of these groups. I’ve had a quick listen and never done it again. But somewhere along the way by accident pressed Fire It Up a release from the beginning of 2012. It’s no typical Dal Shabet track, but who the hell cares, it’s just awesome. Then not longa ago the released Have/Don’t Have, in to MV versions, this one is the awesome version. Dal Shabet is neither my biggest surprise of the year though.

I have actually seen Rania perform live once in Seoul, or perhaps twice. The tracks they released in the beginning, like Dr Feelgood, never really got to me. But they were of course never bad though and I know that Mis has been a fan for a long time. They had an image that I found interesting but not much more then that. But when they released Style in September 2012, everything changed. A very new style actually, maybe not so fun for their ppld fans perhaps, but this time they really got to me. Not as many members, individual cool clothing and an epic track. It soon mad it’s way into every playlist I made and is climbing to the top in my Itunes library.

Rania is my big and happy surprise of 2012.

Soo good

End of the year, K-pop 2012. The List

December 29, 2012 § 6 Comments

k_tvxq_catchme_duo1

I have been away. In thought and body caught up with the life outside. The writing and the blog left behind with many other things. Listening and fanboying constantly though. As the year is coming to a close I want to share some thoughts of the crazy K-pop year 2012 and see it as a return to writing about the love of my life. K-pop. I won’t make a list of the best tracks of the year because I don’t work that way. (can’t decide etc.) But as a first post I want to share what was listened to and then for a couple of days I will try to give you some hints of what I really liked in K-pop during 2012.

I spent last weekend and also a few hours almost every day this week working on a list of tracks I like or atleast listened to and were released in 2012. It’s a messy compilation of genres, old groups and new ones, some expected, some not so, not all of them are brilliant but of course worth listening to a second time. NOT EVERYTHING IS INCLUDED. This equals K-pop as the love affair it is.

So, here is K-pop 2012, 80 tracks, not in any other specific order then how I put them in my Itunes library to make a nice mix. At the bottom of the post there’s a link to the list on YouTube.

Orange Caramel – Bubble Bath

October 21, 2012 § 3 Comments

It’s not always the best songs on an albums that get promoted, which means that they are often missed out by casual listeners. One of these songs is, in my opinion, “Bubble Bath” from Orange Caramel’s first album “Lipstick” that was released about a month ago. This has been one of my most listened songs these past weeks. (Just sit through the first 30 seconds; for some reason the intro isn’t much to write home about.)

I don’t need a man

October 12, 2012 § Leave a comment

I’m always alarmed and worried when the meaning in words and actions are changed from politics to the conceptual level. This is what Miss A is heading towards using a banner with the words Independent Women and This Is For All The Independent Ladies, for their new promotional pictures. To make money out of a short promotional period on the very much so important issue of womens rights is indeed higly questionable. This is obviously so much of a marketing strategy that no one can be misstaken, but who knows, Miss A might turn out to be part of a newly born feminist movement in South Korea in the end…

Good idea or bad idea to use this concept? Does it make it better or worse that they look awesome in suits and other traditional “male” attires in the teaser MV?

An Old Favorite: After School – Because of You

October 2, 2012 § 3 Comments

I started on this long post about To the Beautiful You and letting idols act as a support from the other side of the world. I sometimes tell people that I needed enough time to really immearse in it to get into kpop, but to be quite honest, I also think that I fell so much in love with it because I needed to, during some pretty dark times for me personally.

I have never really gotten that into After School as persons, so I won’t say that they helped me as idols. But one of the first kpop songs that got to me was an After School song. It was winter. On my ipod I had downloaded a bunch of random kpop songs I had found through some compilation I have no idea what it came from; I think I had pretty much just searched for “kpop” on isohunt and downloaded whatever working torrent I found. The buses didn’t run and it was too snowy to ride my bike, so I was walking to school with my heavy bags, running late but too tired to care.

And then this song came on:

As I didn’t yet know any Korean at all, I had a very vague idea of what the song was about. I realized that it was probably a sad song. But it didn’t matter. Because just at that moment,  the sun rose over the treetops. It shone on the completely snow-covered landscape, and into my eyes, and it blinded me.

You and I, Goo Jae Hee

September 22, 2012 § Leave a comment

There is not really that much to say about To the Beautiful You. It’s colorful and pretty and cheesy and I watch it just for fun. As the episodes have gone by, the drama has become pretty different from the Japanese versions, which is nice for me who’s pretty familiar with those. Choi Min Ho is hot when he’s in pain but his childish smile turns me off. Sulli is probably more awesome than the role lets her show (Biased? Who, me?) because let’s face it, the character Goo Jae Hee is pretty annoying. But she’s not so annoying I can’t like her. And yesterday when I went through some old pictures, I realized one of the reasons for that:

Me, fifteen years old!

Goo Jae Hee

I really wish I had found a picture where I was dressed in my schoolboy outfit, including white shirt and tie. But even without the school uniform, I guess it’s not completely impossible to see some reasons for identification with Goo Jae Hee…

Long-distance crushes

September 21, 2012 § Leave a comment

Just wanted to share this short conversation I had with a friend I met up with the other week. (Note: This is translated from Swedish to English, which is harder than expected. I will here be using “they” as a gender-neutral singularis pronoun and “you” as a non-specified pronoun; my friend was not addressing me especially.)

Friend: I have decided to try not having someone special while I’m [living at the Folk High School]. Because I know it’s like that… that whenever you get bored, sad, feel stuck where you are, or a little lonely, you will flee to that person. You will think about them, look at pictures of them… Maybe talk to them, or visit them, but that’s not the most important part.

Me: Yeah, I know.

Friend: It’s just escaping, really.

Me: This is when it’s good to have idols.

Friend: It is, right? And then no one gets hurt. Because you know it’s not for real.

Me: Something like that, though not that it’s not real… It’s just that the responsibility towards an idol is less direct. You can leave them for a while, then look to them again when you need them, and that won’t hurt them. You know them, but they don’t expect anything from you specifically, or personally.

Not the full answer or truth, certainly. But one small part of what idols are to me. I hope it doesn’t sound like I don’t think fans have a responsibility towards their idols, because I really do think that fans should be there for their idols just as much as the opposite. However, should a fan not be able to pay enough attention to a particular release at a particular time, it’s not like their idol will call them specifically and be hurt and ask what they are up to. And although that can sometimes feel sad, it can actually be a very good thing too.
